Sometimes the spam comments make me laugh…. If you are going to walk like a Buddha, please make sure to wear a pair of Tom’s. I guess of all of the shoes out there, Tom’s might be the most Bodhisattvic?

I know this was tongue in cheek, but choosing TOMS would be…anti-Bodhisattvic (it’s a word, go with it). While certainly helpful to the individual recipient of its charity (until they outgrow the shoes, anyway), on the societal level, the program exacerbates poverty by reducing demand for local manufactures (not unlike how a flood of cheap imports from Europe deindustrialized countries on the periphery). If you want to support Africans and get a new pair of sneakers, check out http://www.solerebelsfootwear.co/pages/our-ethos or http://www.oliberte.com/story/why-africa/

Thanks for this. As tongue in cheek as the post was, I am now really getting schooled on Tom’s and their practices.

Those links are very helpful. Thanks for your comment and for providing some suggestions on shoes that are truly well meaning in their motivation.
