For Jason
“For a mind flitting alone in the bardo like a piece of cotton in the wind,
To find comfort in the strong hands of people of peace and wisdom
Is the chance to soar to the pure land without trembling in fear or crying in sadness.
What amazing solace to be saved from wandering aimlessly through the unknown!”
- Tulku Thondup - “Peaceful Death, Joyful Rebirth”
Dying well is truly a gift and I am honored to have been able to see how it can be faced without fear and without pretense or falseness. My dear friend Jason maintained his delightful sense of humour, patience, cheerful demeanor and practice in the most difficult of situations.
Happy trails to you. Until we meet again.
Your friends, family and sangha are all sending you our best for you in your future lifetimes. May you once again know the joy of a hot tamale.
Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche was Jason’s teacher and in tribute, I wish to post this video from the series on “Dying Well” which speaks to the end and how it relates to new beginnings and renewal. There is such profound teaching in this one little clip that I wish to send out for benefit to all.
(Should you wish to read a bit more about my friend and teacher, Jason Piercy (aka @JasonPie) please check out this article from a local newspaper). It does a great job in describing his journey along the path.

Yes, how one dies is such a reflection of one’s true self! I see that very much at the Zen Hospice where I volunteer . . .
While I am happy for the gift of your connection with your friend, I also feel sad for you and extend my heartfelt wishes,
that you may be at peace, and at ease, in the midst of your grief.
