Back and at it…
Well my laptop is fixed and hoo ha I’m more attached to it than ever. I was just listening to a podcast from Gil Fronsdal speak about his recent PC crash and the same thoughts and fears raced through my mind with my latest hard drive crash.
The thoughts that raced around he calls ‘premature cognitive commitments’ which is quite an interesting context in which to examine the whirling thoughts.
Ah the impermanence of data.. Sigh…

Gil called his computer ‘his second mind’ and in so many ways this is quite true. I lost a bit of my mind.
I lost about 3 months of data after my hard drive crashed and was surprisingly ok with the whole thing. In the grand scheme of things, I didn’t lose any work that I would be paid for. Didn’t lose any important manuscripts of my memoirs. No missing blog posts. The great mystery around what exactly was lost still hangs over me, but with time, it will be replaced with the now.
Just as I have trouble getting myself to sit on the cushion everyday, I have a problem with backing up my system.
Lesson learned.
The commitment to back up my system daily is now going to be the ping to flag my commitment to meditate daily.

Excellent parallel between mind and hard drive, and back up and meditation. PING!
