Seeking awesome commentary on Nagarajuna’s Mulamadhyamakakarika

2009 June 3

I’m looking for recommendations for a well written, clear and easy to grasp commentary on Nagarajuna’s Mulamadhyamakakarika. I’m part of a summer book club studying this text and am having a rough time wrapping my head around the current book we’ve been using.

In addition to this, I find that having a second book to refer to throughout my examination does come in very handy.

Any help is much appreciated!

Which one are you using? I recommend Jay Garfield’s translation with commentary. For a more fast and loose translation with commentary try Stephen Batchelor’s Verses from the Centre. Unfortunately “easy to grasp” and Mulamadhyamakakarika don’t really go together all that well. Good luck!

I was at a seminar at the North Carolina Zen Center in April with Jay Garfield, the talks were recorded and will be available from the NCZC so check their site or email, as they were really amazing and inspiring.

I would recommend Stephen Batchelor’s Verses from the Center. It’s a short, sublime book on the topic you seek. Here’s my recent post about fixations, an issue in the book.

I, also, have a couple posts re Nishitana, an interpretor of Nagarjuna in my blog, for what their worth: (1) & (2)
