A few days ago the whole neighborhood was kept awake by the barking of a loud, annoying mutt. My projections made this dog out to be a large, stinky asshole of a canine owned by asshole owners (this part of the projection remains throughout this story, dear reader).

The next morning, said dog picked up the barking from 4am the previous night. In an attempt to better understand what the hank this dog’s problem was, I went outside. A chain link fence stood between me and a panicked, marble-coated dog with a bloated, baby-filled belly. She was trying to understand what was going on and obviously quite uncomfortable having been up all evening trying to get into what I assumed was her home. I tossed some snacks and kibble under the fence to try to keep her around while I called animal rescue. In the meantime, I she gobbled down the food and ran off, not to be seen – or heard from again.

Mama dog, my prayers are with you and your babies. I’m sorry for not checking in on you earlier and trying to help. I hope you’re OK.

I’m trying hard to be patient with whoever owns this dog. I’m trying hard to cultivate loving-kindness for you.

I”m struggling with holding metta for those who deliberately harm others. Struggling hard.
It would be so easy to give in to rage.
*gassho* May we struggle onward, with the certainty that the way is clear.
