30 years of the Shambhala Sun

A big part of discovering the Buddhist path for me came by coming across the Shambhala Sun magazine. Living in an area where I didn’t have ready access to a meditation centre or sangha to help me along, ‘the Sun’ became a welcome guide and friend to me. More than just Buddhism, the Shambhala Sun has helped me to open my mind to new teachers, philosophies, styles and students. In many ways it’s helped to shape me on a monthly basis and given me food for thought on what other Buddhists may be thinking or not thinking about.

The Shambhala Sun has changed with the times in that it has grown from it’s paper format to become more digital and interactive. It has expanded it’s editorial focus to dedicate itself to what is going on in the world rather than reports from the meditation halls and it has provided a forum for Buddhists on the fringes to share their stories with others
30 years have passed and the most recent issue is well worth picking up as it features articles on:
- A historical and sociological glance at American Buddhism titled “Thirty Fascinating Years of American Buddhism” by Barry Boyce
- “What’s next?” Predictions by Buddhist luminaries such as: Sharon Salzberg, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, Eido Roshi, Sylvia Boorstein, Robert Thurman and Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche
- The Best of Buddhism in America: Teachings- Presents a collection of teachings published in the Sun over the years. (by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Thich Nhat Hanh, the Dalai Lama and Pema Chodron to name a few)
- Features on both the bestselling Buddhist books as well as those which have meant the most to several Buddhist teachers
I congratulate those behind the Shambhala over the years for a job well done at helping to provide an elegant, dynamic and multi-faceted container for the dharma.
