Emru Townsend made a difference

Some of you may recall my previous blog posts mentioning Emru Townsend’s search for a bone marror donor and his brave and courageous blogging efforts chronicling his experiences with Leukemia. It’s with sadness that I write that Emru passed away November 12th.

Both Emru and his sister, Tamu both worked tirelessly to raise awareness around the need to register as bone marrow donors, especially those who are members of minority groups.

Tamu posted the following on the Heal Emru blog

He taught me how to live. He taught me how you are supposed to die.

Emru’s name means RESPECT.
Emru, the person, also means compassion, learning, teaching, sharing, love, integrity, honesty, and inspiration.

He taught a lot of people a lot of things, but he spent 2008 teaching people how to reach out to one another in a whole new way. If you carry some of this forward, it will be a year even better spent.

So true. I’d encourage all of you to practice tonglen for Emru’s family, to add your information to the bone marrow registry or to engage in your own way (join a Facebook group/ learn more about the cause/ blog about Emru’s story… )
