We’re already there.
While taking the bus early this morning, I read a bit of “Contemplating Reality” by Andy Karr and was struck by the following passage in which Karr mentions how the Karmapa speaks of how
“… all sentient beings, from the smallest insect, to the most realized human, have this wisdom nature, and have had this wisdom nature from beginningless time. Therefore, the purpose
of the path is to reveal buddhahood , not to create it.”
A few nights ago in a Buddhist class we had an exchange and I found myself hung up on a ‘goal-oriented’ mentality to ‘nirvana’, ‘samsaric-elimination’ or ‘realized buddhaness’. Sometimes I find that its easy to get caught up in the show of Buddhism and want results. Instant karma. Maybe the school system prepared me for wanting the gold dharama star on my homework? Regardless, it’s good to be reminded that basic goodness or buddha nature is already there. It just maybe covered up with textbooks that haven’t cracked open, yesterday’s lunch and a copy of ‘Punk Rock Confidential’ (which was indeed cracked open!)
