What is the true face of your Facebook?

Confession time – For a few months I’ve been a Facebook addict.

I get lost in the invites from old elementary school friends who are long but memories to me. Memories of me throwing up hot dogs in class. Memories of wearing all of my cool, Captain America-listening auntie’s hand me downs. Memories of not having a care in the world and breezing through life on a banana seat bicycle.

Then there is the ego-surfing on Facebook. The unskillful conversations that come about. The ‘poking’ (they don’t call it that for any old reason you know!!!) The old wounds that should stay closed. The talk best left unsaid. The misunderstandings.

Over the past little while I’ve wondered if others struggle with the issues that social media websites pose for the tech-savvy Buddhist. As much as I enjoy the interconnectedness and information sharing that comes from these sites, often times I’m left feeling a growing sense of unease. Seems a bit ridiculous to post these thoughts on my blog. Oh well.. My virtual sangha can flame me all they want!!!

Wow – you threw up hotdogs in class?? This piece you wrote is so true – Facebook is not just fun stuff, it reopens weird dialogues with relationships and people from times gone by; people who would normally be so far removed from your life and who now want to call you their friend. How odd. Yes, definitely, there is unease there. On another note, my husband told me to join because he’s tired of being married to nobody. ;)
