Suffering 101
When someone you care for is in excruciating pain, in a hospital bed from day to day, being told that the treatments they are taking aren’t working, that it might not get better. Their wife is panicked – feeling helpless and weeping at the other end of the phone and hoping for some kind of miracle… some kind of action that someone can take, but you know that any suggestion you make seems like a shot in the dark at this point.
Stumbling around Google, hoping to find a cure, a wonder drug, experimental treatment, clinical trial, a better doctor, Oprah, Dr. Weil, God, prayer, transcendental meditation, healing crystals ANYTHING dammit… but knowing that it’s not there.
Facing fear. Turning towards the unknown. Facing the suffering is so hard. I know I’m not there yet, but I can only imagine how mind-blowing liberation from samsara must feel.
