So as it turns out, I do need to have laser surgery on my eyes. An iridotomy to be exact.

First off I will have the left eye done. Then weeks later, the right. I should be able to go back to work shortly after the laser probe makes a tiny incision into my iris. GACK! I’m such a baby and not looking forward to this.

My eye surgeon is a super guy. Met with him on Monday and he really assured me that everything would be cool and there are minimal risks. He had a steady handshake although it troubled me that he wore glasses… I can be so superficial sometimes!

Now a question for those Buddhists out there – What is the protocol on protector cords? Should I take mine off for my surgery as I have read that some do this as the cord can negate the effects of medical procedures. (Is this some kind of Buddhist old wives tale?)

Completely off topic-
I would never tell my dog this but I hate when he licks his paws and then licks the couch. I know he likes it but it is damm annoying. The sound bugs me so much and he really goes to town on it. Do other dogs like licking couches? He sometimes licks his bed too and that is even more irritating. 4 in the morning and a highly concentrated pug is off licking every square inch of his donut shaped camo printed bed. Ah what can I do? I love the little guy. Strange coincidence that we both have eye troubles (his cornea was punctured by a stick while he was a pup).

That’s an interesting question regarding the protector cord. I’m no budhist, and I barely know what the cords are for – but if I deduce that they stem from traditional beliefs and offer a sense of protection to the wearer then I say keep it on. If you believe in incorporating certain western ways (such as the eye procedure) into your own practice, then embrace this balance and have confidence that what you are doing is a good thing, and will work out. Don’t feel as if you’ll be damned by the powers that be – isn’t that the opposite of Budhist thought anyway?
